Questions anyone thinking about having the operation needs to think about before deciding to take the plunge

1. Will I be able to have at least six weeks off work?

2. Will I have someone with me who can help me in the first 3 weeks minimum?

3. Am I comfortable with the person helping me doing almost everything for me for the first few weeks, helping you to the toilet in and out of the shower and dressing you?

4. How old am I, will it be worth it? (I was in my 22 and 23 when I had mine done so hopefully I will have many years of benefit. To someone in much later life eg:- 50 or 60 having the operation maybe too traumatic and not worth it in the long run.)

5. Will I be able to sit back and not do anything for a few weeks? (doing too much can break the wires meaning the operation was pointless)

6. Who will look after the kids?

7. Do I want this or is it the hospital pushing it on me.

8. Have I got enough strength to make a difference? (The operation
doesn’t give extra strength, try having someone pushing your blade in and lift your arm, if you can lift your arms higher it’s likely to be beneficial.)

9. Am I willing to put a lot of hard work into physiotherapy for a few months after the operation?

10. Am I willing to put myself through pain to have this operation? (It is very painful but it is manageable and will get better).

I was asked by the Physiotherapist at the NMC last week if I'd thought about having this op and I told her that I had considered it but decided against it for the same reasons as above I'm 50 and think its something that would probably benefit younger people, also the physio pointed out that its also not a good idea if you are having breathing problems as it restricts the lung expansion on the back ribs.
